What is a quad, you might ask? Well, in simple terms, it's an all-terrain vehicle or ATV. ATVs come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and mostly importantly handling and speed :) There are ATVs for small riders, utility ATVs used for hunting, working on a farm or just around the house, mud riding and hill climbing, and sport ATVs used for racing and just plain fun. Many people, especially those who ride sport ATVs, refer to them as quads. Others just refer to them as four wheelers. Well, ATV is the technical term and four wheeler just doesn't sound as exciting as quad. The name quad comes from (depending on who you talk to) some of the first sport ATV models built in the mid and late '80s by Suzuki, which built the Quadsport, Quadrunner, Quadracer, and one of the "baddest" quads ever built, the Quadzilla. Personally, I'm into the sport quads. I own a 2001 Honda 400EX, which was awarded the quad of the decade for the '90s. I previously owned a 1986 Suzuki LT230S Quadsport. The Quadsport was my first quad, and it was badly abused as I was learning to ride. This poor thing has taken several tumbles down some pretty steep climbs in the hills of the Ozark mountains in northwest Arkansas and southwest Missouri. I am in the process of totally rebuilding the Quadsport to have an extra quad for friends to ride when they visit. I've had the top end of the motor totally rebuilt, and am working all the way through the body to get it in great shape. It's pretty satisfying keeping a quad this old in good running condition. Now, my pride and joy is my 400EX. This quad is an incredible machine. It handles better than any quad on the market today. It's not as fast as some, but a little work makes it a competitor to some of it's bigger brethren. The combination of speed and handling make this quad a "can't miss" if you are into riding sport quads. I have spent a lot of time and money into putting aftermarket accessories to really personalize my 400EX, not to mention a few things to make it a little faster and safer. I have recently upgraded my quad to be a 416EX with a high performance piston and race cam and all the new motor parts to go with it. It runs like a monster now :) I've started racing at a VERY amateur level at some local motocross tracks here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and in the TQRA (Texoma Quad Racing Association). I just want to go out and have some fun and not hurt myself. I don't really care about winning, although if I ever get good I will start caring because my competitive nature will take over. I just consider myself an average rider, maybe bordering on good, but I try to ride within my own abilities rather than trying crazy things right off the bat. I just don't heal as quick as I did about ten years ago :) |

| Riding quads is a blast! It's good,
clean fun, and I always have a good time riding with a bunch of friends. This being said,
quad riding "CAN" be dangerous. You need use caution and care and always look
out for other riders out there. Don't try things you are scared to do, or are beyond your
riding abilities. The same could be said about a lot of things in life, huh? You wouldn't
go driving into rush hour traffic your first time out, would you? Well, when riding quads,
you need to start out with the basics and begin to work up to more advanced riding
techniques as you get more practice. I continue to learn new things everytime I go out. Also, don't be afraid of the quad, because that can get you hurt quickly, but DO respect the quad and know its limits. So, don't go into 4x4 terrain on a two-wheel drive sport quad, and don't go doing 50ft jumps on a utility quad. Remember to have fun and mostly importantly, BE SAFE! |
